This is a large example and high amount of applied decorations of this sought after type of glass. Thomas Webb & Sons applied for patent for this glass in August 29, 1877, granted Feb 27, 1878.
Displayed at the 1878 Paris exhibition. This line was developed to imitate the early classical Roman, Pompeii, Egyptian glass discovered in the 19.Century which had a natural iridescence due to contact with the ground. This was the beginning of handmade iridescent glass that culminated near and after the 1900s with LC Tiffany and also in the more mass-produced/lesser priced ware now known as carnival glass. Bronze glass is typically done on green glass in comparison to this example on blue.
August 29, 1878: the following commentary by Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, with specific reference to Tho. Webb and Sons'Bronze Glass' appeared. On a recent visit to Mr Goode's attractive galleries at Audley Street, we noticed a fine selection of the new Bronze Glass, discovered and made by Messrs. Thomas Webb and Sons, of Stourbridge.
Its purple bronze surface shines with the hues of the rainbow, such as they appear on molten lead, or on pieces of steel which have been tempered in gradually diminishing degrees of heat....... See ppgs 247-248 in Nineteenth Century Glass by A C Revi. The patent was applied for on August 29, 1877 and granted on February 27, 1878.Bronze glass was a form of iridescent finish made to compete with Bohemian products of that time. This treatment was to mimic Roman and other ancient glass, being excavated at the time, which had a natural iridescence due to soil contact. Bronze glass is a close cousin to the later mass produced American carnival glass. It is produced by exposure of the glass in a semi-molten state to fumes of chloride of tin, alone or mixed, with the nitrates of barium and strontium. Selection of items from local estates.
