This vase was inspired by waves and is designed by famous architect and designer Alvar Aalto. The name Savoy came from the Savoy Restaurant in Helsinki that Alvar Aalto was furnishing while participating at the glass design competition at theParis World Fair of 1937. Alvar Aalto used many of them to furnish the restaurant and that is why it is called Savoy. The fact that the vase won first prize in the competition made it even more popular. Each glass piece is hand blown at the iittala factory in Finland.
The Alvar Aalto Collection has been a staple of modern Scandinavian design and the most iconic series with iittala. One of the first designers to be inspired by the natural organic shapes. The most peculiar characteristic of the vase is its shape. Aalto vases seem to mimic the water they hold. And then makes a sculpture when empty. The Savoy vase has been, and still is, produced in many different colors and sizes by iittala. This Royal Cobalt blue color was last available in the 1980s and is a rare find today. This vase has not been used and comes in original box. The original box has some wear. There are no cracks or chips.
