Loetz Nouveau Melon Rib Art Glass Cabinet Vase Sterling Silver Overlay Fish HM
Offered here is a very very nice, to the best of my research, a unsigned Loetz Art Nouveau art glass cabinet vase with a hallmarked sterling silver overlay. The sterling silver overlay was hand applied and hand chased to the surface of the glass. The vase is melon ribbed with six sections that are each divided by silver overlay. The lower area of each section has a Y shaped design that connects with the vertical silver ribs to form a connected design that goes around the vase that actually creates 12 panels on the lower sides of the vase. At the bottom outer edge a band of silver goes completely around the vase.
The upper neck and underside of the lip of the vase are completely covered in textured silver that shows an excellent skill in workmanship! At the top edge the silver folds over the ground flat top edge of the glass part way thus leaving the interior part of the ground top intentionally exposed to view. The vase is stamped in capital letters: STERLING on the bottom edge band of silver. To the left of the STERLING mark there is a very interesting side view FISH hallmark which I could not learn the origin of before listing the vase. The sterling silver overlay looks like it was applied to match the surface swirls in the glass and creases between the six melon sections of the vase. Thus the silver surface is contoured to match the irregular surface of the glass. I polished the silver carefully and left some areas with the dark patina to provide contrast to the silver design elements. The vase is just over 3 & ¾ high. At the top edge it has an outer diameter of 2 & ½. The bottom base is 2 & ¼ wide at the widest place. There are a few places where there are some very small pock marks in the surface of the glass that are too small to measure. The last photo shows the panel with the most of the small surface marks I described. Other panels have far less marks. Please appreciate that I showed the panel with the most marks and not the one with the smallest number. There are no places where the silver is separating or lifting from the surface of the glass. There are no chips in the glass and no cracks in the glass. Overall this beautiful art glass vase is in very good condition. I have made every effort to show the vase as it actually appears.
