Neodymium Glass Vase by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala. In production 1966-69, Mid-Century Modern, Finland.
Etched on the underside of this vase is Tapio Wirkkala 3539. This gorgeous vase was designed by the famous Tapio Wirkkala in the 60's. Neodymium or'Alexandrite' glass contains the rare earth element neodymium oxide.
When this element is added to the glass melt, its sharp absorption bands mean that colour transforms in different lighting conditions. In daylight the base of the vase appears lilac, but in white light it appears pale blue. The use of this material really reflects the experimental side of the 60s and 70s! Please be aware that due to the age of this item, there may be some visible signs of light surface wear.
There are no repairs, indentations, cracks or discoloured areas. If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out to me. The item "Original Mid-Century Blue & Lilac Glass Vase by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala" is in sale since Sunday, December 13, 2020.
