Steuben, Blue Aurene Shade Vase, Very Nice, Bob Rockwell Gallery

The vase is known as a "Shade" vase and it is done in Frederick Carder's most desirable Blue Aurene style of art glass. The vase stands 5 3/4" tall and is 5 1/4" in diameter at the mouth of the vase. The vase is just gorgeous!!

The Blue Aurene iridescence is beautiful. You can see a deep platinum metallic blue iridescence. The bottom and inside iridescence displays a deep peacock blue with strong hints of fuchsia and purples.

The vase sits on a round foot with vertical ribbing rising up from the foot and extending to the edges of the flaring top lip curling to the right as it approaches the top lip. This shade vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. I could find only a couple of very small bumps in the glass. These are known as inclusions "sand trapped within the glass" and is typical in these type vases.

The bottom of the vase has a counter sunk polished pontil. This is the finishing sign of a quality piece of art glass.

The vase is signed on the bottom with the engraved "Steuben Aurene" cipher mark along with its shape number "913". As an added bonus there is a foil label where the vase was bought. It was bought from the famous collector and Steuben Glass shop on Market Street in Corning, NY. It still retains its "Rockwell Gallery" foil label. Bob Rockwell owned this store and gallery for many, many years. He was a personal friend of Frederick Carder. The store is still there today but with different owners. Shade vases were considered late production from the Steuben Glass Company's Art Nouveau period.

This is considered shape number 913 in Steuben's early catalog pages. Those of you who collect Steuben Blue Aurene and want an excellent example do not let this one slip by.
